Pointe Claire lies in that quiet part of Montreal's West Island. Many people don't know the significance of the word and believe it's an island that is separate from Montreal. The truth is, this part of Montreal is more than that. West Island includes the entire area from Lachine up to the west. There is an argument that it was the place of birth for Amanda Brugel, but while this is the case however, her time there was brief. Brugel lived in Courtice close to Oshawa. She was aspiring to be dancing at first, but due to the rapid growth of her body, she surpassed her dancing partners. In a piece in The Toronto Star she admitted, "In heels I'm 6' 1 inch. Once I outgrew my male counterparts I cut off. Former dancers often turn towards acting. In Brugel's case, it was the guidance of an instructor in drama at her high school which led her to take the step she required. It was her teacher who recommended her to audition for the role of Anne in their annual school production. After a few auditions, she became the lead actress for the role of Rita in Anne of Green Gables. This resulted in a Fine Arts Talent Scholarship at York University where she attended the Theatre Program which she graduated with the Bachelor in Fine Arts degree in 2000.In the 20+ years since, Brugel has landed roles in over 60 shows both on small and big screens. Her most notable role attracted interest when she was offered the part of Rita in the award-winning show, The Handmaid's Tale
